REGENERATIVE CO-DESIGN IN NAKIVALE REFUGEE SETTLEMENT
Junoscape partnered with Ugandan NGO YICE and British NGO Re-Alliance to design and deliver a co-design process in the design of a new community within the Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda.
At the heart of this project was the inclusion and empowerment of the village’s new residents, all of whom are refugees originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. Secondly, regenerative design was a central tenet of the project.
Junoscape led the design of a series of workshops, covering visioning, participatory mapping and site assessment, which culminated in a masterplanning workshop to co-design the site plan. Junoscape translated the ideas of the future residents into a cohesive masterplan, embedding regenerative design principles and nature-based solutions.
An accompanying handbook of design principles was also produced to help guide the residents and local partners in the delivery of the co-designed masterplan.
Construction began in August 2026.
