FLOOD-RESILIENT PLAYGROUND FOR ALL SOULS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Junoscape acted as lead landscape architect in the design of a concept plan for an existing school playground, which suffers from regular flooding. Working with the schoolchildren in a series of workshops as well as a civil engineer, the team designed a playground around the concept of a growth garden for both human and more-than-human beings.
Given the urban location of the school, the space was relatively small and contained, presenting several design challenges related to accommodating different stages and types of play.
The final design was centred on a series of rain gardens, some accessible to the children, which framed a series of spaces providing different functions with matching planting palettes. Crucially, the rain gardens were strategically located and sized to balance maximising rainwater absorption - up to at least a 100-year rainfall event - and allowing for a wide variety in play, focussed on interacting and growing with nature.
